HM the King chairs launch ceremony of 2014-2016 Salé integrated urban upgrading program
PERSISMA, Salé (12 February 2014) – HM King Mohammed VI chaired, on Wednesday in Salé, the launch ceremony of the city’s 2014-2016 integrated urban upgrading program, a structuring project to preserve the historical heritage of this centuries-old city, improve the lifestyle of its citizens and spur its socio-economic basis.
At the beginning of this ceremony, the Wali of the Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaer region Abdelouafi Laftit gave before HM the King a presentation wherein he underlined that the new program was elaborated in conformity with the royal instructions aimed at developing the urban fabric of the kingdom’s different regions according to a coherent, balanced vision.
Worth 1.038 billion dirhams, the new program is based on a systematic participatory approach that brings together all city’s actors, he added, noting that the three-year program touches on four main broad lines, namely the preservation of the city’s culture and heritage, the reinforcement of basic infrastructure, the development of the tourism and handicraft sector and the eradication of shanties.
The program seeks the rehabilitation of the old médina of Salé, inns and run-down houses, the promotion of jobs related to the craft industry, the restoration of the city’s historical sites, the redevelopment of the coast road, the upgrading of some streets (Hay Essalam, Abderrahim Bouabid, Atlas Al Kabir, Ibn Al Haitam) and the city’s access roads, as well as the promotion of under-equipped neighborhoods.
The program is meant to equitably share community-based equipment between the city’s different urban segments, promote employment and create wealth.
On this occasion, HM the King chaired the signing ceremony of a partnership agreement on the 2014-2016 Salé integrated urban upgrading program. It was signed by Interior Minister Mohamed Hassad, Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq, Minister of Housing Mohamed Nabil Benabdellah, and Fatima Merouane, Minister of Handicraft.
It was also signed by Mohamed Lotfi Mrini, Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture, Abdelouafi Laftit, Abdelkebir Berkia, President of the Regional Council, and Mustafa Kheidri, Governor of the Prefecture of Salé.
