Morocco: Raising Awareness about Women’s Rights in Sidi Kacem

PERSISMA, Sidi Kacem – In celebration of International Women’s Day, in March every year, in collaboration with Peace Corps Morocco Gender and Development Committee, will host a gender advocate training in Sidi Kacem.

the People’s Advocate Council (PAC)This training will address inequality in girls’ education both locally and globally. The training will take place each Sunday in March at a local high school in Sidi Kacem. It will host both boys and girls and will be facilitated by Oumaima Nouali, Abdellah Bouderqa, and Justin Bibee.

The training is designed for students with a minimum knowledge level of gender issues and is meant to raise awareness about the importance of educating a girl, and the impact it has on a community.

It will include four activities throughout the training that raise awareness and skills about advocating for women’s rights. Participants will critically discuss and argue implications of gender in the educational, legal, and socioeconomic spheres.

Students will also have the opportunity to think about gender and gender identity through role-playing. By the end, participants will gain an understanding of gender as a social construction.

Justin Bibee and Abdellah Bouderqa, both founders of People’s Advocate Council, attended a similar training in Meknes developed by the Gender and Development Committee, Peace Corps Morocco. That training was in collaboration with the Association de Bienfaisance pour le Developpment et la Solidarite and Association Oxygene.

People’s Advocate Council will be advancing knowledge about the rights of women and the right to education through the implementation of the gender advocate training in Sidi Kacem.
