Africa Security Forum kicks off on Monday in Casablanca
PERSISMA, Rabat – The Africa Security Forum began its discussions on the security and geopolitical dynamics in the Africa on Monday. The participants are focusing on the transnational aspect of threats on security.
The participants took the floor and all confirmed that the security issue is no longer confined to one territory. Border permeability has made the security threat a regional debate. Against this backdrop, the participants called for intensifying programs, cooperation, and exchanges and for a genuine security strategy with common preoccupation.
According to the participants, the Sahel region is marked by instability, and is considered one of the most vulnerable regions on the continent. The rise of some terrorist groups raises questions regarding the necessity of the legitimacy of public authorities and on the role of the state to ensure security.
In this regard, Morocco stands as shining example in the region. According to the participants, Morocco has succeeded in developing an integrated security policy. The role of the public authorities and the micro-economic developments that have taken place in Morocco have contributed to the success of its security policy.
Participants addressed the correlation between the political, economic, and security aspects of the situation in Africa, and raised the role of the European Union and the United Sates in enhancing growth and supporting the development process in order to curb radicalization and organized crime.
The Sahel region has recently been sanctuary for terrorist groups, human traffickers, and arms smuggling, especially after the overthrow of Moammar El Qaddafi’s regime and the ongoing conflict in Libya.
