Le Figaro: ‘Morocco’s Return to AU is Only a Formality’
PERSISMA, Casablanca – French newspaper Le Figaro said that Morocco’s return to the African Union (AU), expected on Monday January 30, “is only a matter of formality,” as Morocco received the “final written” support of over 40 member states.
The subject of Morocco’s return to the African Union was the focal point of an article published on Saturday by the French news source, Le Figaro.
The article, titled “The great return of Morocco to the African Union,” says that Morocco’s return “is only a matter of formality insofar as the Kingdom has already obtained the final written support of over 40 member states.”
The article stresses that Morocco’s “reunion” with the countries of the Pan-African organization is occurring 33 years after its withdrawal from this international body (the language has to be smooth and void redundancy, to say Morocco and kingdom in one sentence is a big redundancy).
The exit, which followed the admission of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) into the organization, was intended by late King Hassan II to protest this admission.
33 years after leaving the AU, “Morocco should return to this institution Monday after a vote of African heads of state, on the occasion of the 28th annual summit of the African Union,” scheduled on January 30 and 31 in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, says the news source.
According to the same source, Morocco shifted from its area of influence in the Sahel and West Africa, to East Africa in recent months.
King Mohammed VI made a diplomatic tour to the region to renew and strengthen political ties with this part of the continent. Le Figaro notes that Morocco has deployed great means to make its sub-Saharan vocation convincing.
This return is expected to raise the thorny issue of the Sahara, which has lasted for four decades. “Since the beginning of the conflict, Algeria has been supporting the Polisario Front,” it added.
Morocco’s Foreign Affairs and Cooperation minister, Salaheddine Mezouar, stated on January 18, at the Committee’s meeting in the House of Representatives during the approval of the Constitutive Act of the AU, that “Morocco carried out a wide international campaign to receive massive support,” adding that 40 countries sent their support letter to Morocco.
