Morocco Elected Chair of UN General Assembly Third Committee

PERSISMA, United Nations – Morocco, in the person of the kingdom’s ambassador to the UN Omar Hilale, was unanimously elected Monday as chair of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly for its upcoming 70th session.

Morocco’s election, on behalf of Africa, as chair of the main body of the UN General Assembly is an international recognition of the bold reforms undertaken by King Mohammed VI in human rights and His personal commitment to African causes, according to observers at the United Nations.

The General Assembly allocates to the Third Committee, agenda items relating to a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues that affect people all over the world.

Made up of all the 193 Member States of the United Nations, the General Assembly provides a forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the UN Charter.

It meets in regular session intensively from September to December each year, and thereafter as required.
