Morocco to play a role in Libya’s democratic transition and reconstruction- Head of Government

“We have a role to play in Libya, because we have a common history and over 100,000 Moroccan nationals in Libya,” El Fassi told the press following the “friends of Libya” international conference, co-chaired by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The Head of the Government, who was accompanied by Foreign Minister Taib Fassi Fihri, highlighted “ Morocco’s very important institutional experience, which was boosted following the adoption of a new constitution,” expressing the Kingdom’s willingness to bring support in this respect, notably as “ Libya is preparing to launch an institutional process to start with the adoption of a provisional constitution.”

“Our jurists and experts can help in establishing a framework for promoting liberties and human rights,” the Moroccan official added.

Speaking to the high-level conference on Libya, which brought together delegations from 62 nations, El Fassi recalled that Morocco “ is among the first countries” to have recognized the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) as the “ sole and legitimate representative of the Libyan people.”

Morocco, “which has supported the fight of the Libyan people for establishing the rule of law and  democracy and defending Human Rights”, “positively” welcomes the victory of the NTC over Gaddafi’s forces.

Concerning the Maghreb Union, El Fassi voiced hope that the democratization of Libya will contribute to reinvigorate the regional grouping after years of stagnation.

El Fassi also stressed the need to unlock Libyan assets to address the enormous shortages and help rebuild war-torn Libya.

The 62 nations taking part in Paris conference on Libya are called upon to bring institutional, economic and social support to ensure Libya’s reconstruction, he said.
