Washington: Sahara autonomy plan, a realistic and credible

PERSISMA, Washington – United States insists that the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara is “serious, realistic and credible,” and is a potential approach to “meet the aspirations of the people of the Sahara to manage their own affairs in peace and dignity,” a joint statement from the first Strategic Dialogue between Morocco and the United States, held in Washington on September 13 last year. Noted in this regard that “U.S. policy toward the Sahara remained constant for several years.”

Washington said, “continue to support efforts to find peace problems lasting and mutually acceptable in Sahara,” adding that the United States also continues to support the UN negotiations and “urged the parties to work to resolve the dispute.”

The United States and Morocco will work “to strengthen regional relations – political, economic and security – in North Africa, including through the Arab Maghreb,” a joint statement, stressing that “the two sides will also seek to promote the common policy objectives, including Syria, peace in the Middle East, and the promotion of human rights at the international level.
