UNHCR urged to intervene to set free the population held in Tindouf

PERSISMA, Geneva – The International Democratic Center (IDC) urged, on Friday in Geneva , the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the international community to intervene to set free the families held captive in the polisario-run camps of Tindouf (south-western Algeria ).

 

Addressing the Human Rights Council’s eighteenth session, Mami Ahl Ahmed from the IDC called upon the UNHRC to intervene so as to enable the camps population to reunite with their relatives in their homeland Morocco and stressed the urgent need for opening the camps to international organizations so as to bring justice to the victims.

The IDC voiced concerns over the increasing physical and psychological violence unleashed on the Sahrawis held captive in the camps of Tindouf, where basic rights are denied by the separatists.

The speaker deplored that diseases are spreading in the among the population in the camps in the absence of international protection and the intransigence of the polisario to enable international organizations form enquiring about the situation.

The IDC called on International organizations and the international community to intervene to put an end to the sordid living conditions endured by the Sahrawis held against their will in the camps, where children are forcibly deported away from their relatives.

The IDC also denounced in the strongest terms the embezzlement of humanitarian aid by the polisario administration and called for an immediate return of Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud to his family in Tindouf.
